Soon, the beau and I will be turning orange. It seems that I have been sneaking pumpkin into everything we eat lately. We even had Pumpkin and Chicken Soup the other week (which kicked ass).

Before I tell you about the Pumpkin Cupcakes with Browned Butter Maple Frosting, I must tell you where I got the recipe from!
What do you mean you already know where I got the recipe from?
I think obsessed is a strong word that you should throw around carefully.
Are you trying to insinuate that I have an obsession problem?
You can’t compare this to Tomato Stakes. That was about a man. This is about a woman with lovely recipes for sweets.
Yes, this week’s Cake of the Week, Pumpkin Cupcakes with Browned Butter Maple Frosting does come from Des over at Life’s Ambrosia. Go ahead, accuse me of being addicted. Try her baking! You’ll be just like me… begging for more!
During the month of October, my father is stopping by once a week to have dinner with us. He’s spending a little time in the area helping out a very good friend. Nothing says, “Good job in offering your service” like “come on over and let me guinea pig some food on you.” This has been a bit of a challenge for a few reasons.
1. My seven o’clock coma: Working nine to ten hour days (sometimes straight without a lunch break) can make my meal time conversation a little less than desirable at times. Luckily, the beau handles this. The two of them both enjoy restoring classic cars and they can talk about that until the cows come home (or I fall asleep in my dinner.)
2. Dad’s New Diet: As we grow older, we develop theories about what we need and don’t need in our lives. Dad has decided that he doesn’t need caffeine, red meat, spicy food and chocolate.
I know what you are thinking. It is the same thing I think once a week. What the hell do you feed a man that doesn’t consume caffeine, red meat, spicy food and chocolate? His dinner visits couldn’t have came at a worse time, right in the middle of my Cake A Week challenge.
Sunday morning, I began my desperate search for a cake without chocolate. Was I desperate? Was I too tired to search? Did I just know Des would give me the hookup?
Look at those little magical morsels!
The cupcake portion of this dessert has the same outstanding goodness you will experience with the legendary Pumpkin Cake from her website. If you have not made that yet, slap yourself and get on it immediately!
A note here before we continue. With all of these pumpkin recipes I’ve been enjoying, every single time that I’m scooping the pumpkin puree out of the can I get the tiniest smidgen of pumpkin on my finger. I can never resist, lapping that little bit of pumpkin right up.
*SPOILER ALERT: Pumpkin straight out of the can does not taste anything like pumpkin pie!
I was a little skeptical about using browned butter in the frosting. I stood over my laptop with a stick of butter in my hand, saying, “Des, are you for real?”
Yes. Des is for real.
I cannot begin to explain what the frosting tasted like. It was such a surprising zing of flavor I would almost swear there is cocaine in it. I could have ran laps around the house, yelling for all the neighbors to hear, “WEEEEEEEE! Browned Buttered Maple Frosting!”
I asked the beau what his rating on this would be (while he was devouring his second cupcake in a row). He calmly replied that because this was our first cupcake, that he didn’t really have anything to fairly compare it to.
As I headed back to the kitchen, he finished up the delightful little dessert and I’m pretty sure I heard him mumbling something about the pumpkin cake mentioned above. Was he having a flashback of the pumpkin cake? Has he found the pumpkin cake’s little sister in this individual sized version? Or was he just on his way to a sugar induced coma?
We may never know.
